Laer

'Living Laer'
'One could assume that a community with so few citizens is boring, has nothing to offer and can't be suitable to reside in. Well, these people don't know Laer. The community's motto 'Living Laer' is far more than a slogan. Here, people know how to celebrate, have an active club life, the landscape is beautiful and the people are very friendly…'. This quote by Wolfgang Schröder does not only apply to residing in Laer. Visitors to Laer can expect interesting things.

History
The present, modern community Laer originated from the two villages Laer and Holthausen in 1969. The twin towns of Laer are the cities Badersleben in Saxony-Anhalt and Guénange in France. The community's coat-of-arms depicts a black and silver reinforced falcon on a gold coloured background.

Sights
The 'Holsken Museum' of the local Heimatverein invites visitors to rediscover the old trade of clog shoe making. To look a real clog shoemaker master over the shoulder, is an experience of a special kind. The old 'coffee-roasting house' has a historical importance for Laer: the Münsterland was called: land of the coffee pots, because travellers could stop at a farm and home-roasted coffee would be served. Visitors shouldn't miss this experience. Then, a walk is tempting: along the Rolevinck Farm, via the Ewaldibach-Path, oast idyllic houses to the village pond at the town hall. Well worth a visit is the 'Oldenborg', the windmill and the nature monument 'Heidenbaums'.

Culture
A bit unusual for a rather small community: The exqusite cultural programme can easily compete with that of larger towns! Always is September, the lovingly compiled 8-page culture programme brochure changes. the current programme is available at the Kulturamt (culture office) or via the Dorfmarketing Laer e.V.

Unique
Since 2009, Norbert Surmund takes, as night watchman, visitor groups through Laer at night. The walk starts at the town hall place and runs along Ewaldibach, past the Ackerbürgerhaus and ends in the historic council hall. During the walk, the night watchman will tell interesting tales and stories from Laer. For sure, he will tell the story of the Carthusian monk Werner Rolevinck, who was born in Laer in 1425. Werner Rolevinck became famous, especially by his historical summary 'Fasciculum Temporum', an incunabulum from the year 1500, which can be referred to as the world's first history 'bestseller'. Roughly 100.000 copies were printed of this early, with saintly images decorated history book.

Uniquely, the Ewaldi stream flows in the wider surroundings of the Münsterland, then through the charming little village of Laer. In the centre of the rural hustle and bustle is the old sheriff's farm Welling – the present town hall – the associated town hall place, an old warehouse and mill tower and the extensive park and pond facilities.
The community's motto 'Living Laer' is far more than a slogan, here, people know how to celebrate, the landscape is beautiful and the people are very friendly. Laer has a strong and very typical village community. Thus, life here presents itself from its most charming side.

Cultivated inns, exquisite restaurants, cosy holiday homes and hotels invite guests and visitors to feast and relax. With idyllic romantic field-paths, Laer is the ideal starting point for extensive bicycle tours. Imbedded into the cycle park Münsterland with its ca. 4.500 km are standardised signposted cycle paths, which enables visitors to discover the Münsterland.

Whether as a group or as an individual traveller, Laer is always worth a visit.
